Basic Lab Techniques

Some basic lab techniques are essential for the performance of any experiments.  These include pipetting, centrifugation, reagent preparation, and many others.  Here are some basic laboratory techniques that we have written about so far:

  1. Concentrating Protein in Media Samples with Centrifugal Devices
  2. Reagent Preparation
    1. Reconstituting and Aliquoting Human GDF-5 (BioVision)
    2. Reconstituting and Aliquoting Mouse GDF-5 (R&D Systems)
    3. Reconstituting and Aliquoting TGF-β1 (R&D Systems)
  3. Stock Solutions
    1. HEPES Stock Solution (0.1 M, pH 7.4)
    2. 20X DPBS Stock Solution
    3. NaCl (2.0 M) Stock Solution
    4. Tris-HCl (1.0 M, pH 7.4) Stock Solution
  4. RNA Purification
    1. Measuring RNA with a NanoDrop Spectrophotometer
    2. RNA Extraction from Collagen Gels Using Qiagen’s RNeasy Kit (a very commonly used kit)
    3. RNA Extraction from Collagen Gels Using Epoch’s GenCatch Kit (a cheaper alternative to Qiagen’s RNeasy.  I found it to yield equally high quality RNA)
    4. RNA Purification from Monolayer Samples
